Component Recycling

I think I've alluded to this in the past, but in order to salvage something from the garbage, you don't necessarily need to take the whole item home with you. Whether it's the charming legs on a soiled bed, or the hinges on an old cabinet, even the most haggard rejects in the garbage pile likely have at least one component still capable of serving its function.

By the same token, when throwing something away, it's probably a good idea to develop a habit of asking ourselves whether any part of the object may still serve a purpose. I'm sure you wouldn't throw away a car just because it has a flat tire, but I've seen way too many umbrellas in the garbage with about 90% of their parts in working condition.

We can also take it a step further, in thinking about how such components can be repurposed. You don't have to scroll down too far to see how well some old drawers and pallets can make a rad set of planters. Let's consider how eco-friendly this practice can be: fewer items end up in a landfill, you don't have to spend the money / resources on buying something new, and in this case, you can use the planters to grow food! It's a win on multiple fronts.

Think about it!
